Metal restoration is the type of DIY job that will give you a great sense of satisfaction when completed properly, and our easy to follow expert guide will help you do so.
Prepare Area & Strip Paint
It is vital to wear protective gloves and goggles while working with rusty paint or chemicals. Before starting, place a tarpaulin or laminated dustsheet on the floor or ground to protect it. Using a wire brush, brush off as much of the original paint and rust as possible. Then refer to our guide “How to Strip Paint” for instructions on how to remove the remaining paint.
Remove Timber
Use an adjustable wrench to unbolt and remove the seating timber. New timber seat sections will have to be fabricated to replace any damaged or rotten ones.
Apply Primer
Brush on an oxide primer for exterior metal and allow to dry thoroughly.
Apply Paint
Depending on the paint chosen, 2-3 coats of paint should be applied to ensure proper coverage and protection from the elements. Refer to the instructions on your chosen paint for re-coating times.
Prepare New Seating Boards
Using the old pieces of removed seating timber as templates, cut and shape the new boards to measure.
